The Future of Storytelling is 360°

In case you haven't noticed, 360° videos are no longer niche—they're everywhere. Whether it's YouTube content, marketing campaigns, or virtual reality experiences, content creators around the world are rewriting the rules for immersive storytelling with this game-changing format.

And it makes sense. A 360° video doesn't just tell a story—it pulls you inside it. Instead of watching from the sidelines, the audience becomes part of the story, free to explore every angle, every detail, and every moment.

But this also comes with its own set of challenges. How do you guide a viewer's attention when they control where to look? How do you frame a shot when there's no actual frame? And what does it take to master 360° storytelling?

Let's break it down!

Oh, and before you keep reading and get increasingly confused—we're talking about interactive 360° videos in this article. That is, videos where you can freely look around. Most 360° videos you see are actually flat videos that were originally shot in 360°.

Immersion + interactivity = engagement.

What's the best thing about 360° videos? It puts viewers inside the action. Whether it's a travel vlog, a VR experience, or a cinematic short film, 360° content lets people see the world through their own eyes—or better yet, from every angle. But that's also where things get tricky.

In a traditional flat video, you control what the audience sees. In 360°, they decide where to look. So how do you make sure they're not too busy admiring a flower arrangement instead of following a major story development happening behind them?

How to Guide Attention in a 360° Video.

You can't use close-ups or zooms like in flat videos, but you can use movement, lighting, and sound to subtly direct the viewer.

Movement – The eye naturally follows motion. If a character gestures or an object moves across the scene, the viewer will instinctively follow it. A hat, a bottle, a MacGuffin or anything that might be out of the ordinary can be an excellent visual cue, especially when combined with movement.

Visual cues are very important to direct a viewer's attention in 360° videos.
Whether intentional or not, your eyes are probably locked on the capsule toy.

Lighting – A bright light or a subtle spotlight can draw attention to key areas of the scene. Conversely, turning off or dimming the light in areas of less importance is also a great way to direct a viewer away from something.

Spatial audio – Sound that shifts directionally can guide the audience on where to look. This will require additional equipment such as an ambisonic microphone (essentially a 360° microphone), and a whole lot more work in post-production. But if used correctly, the results can be incredible, especially if experienced in VR.

Want to see this in action? Next time you watch a great 360° video, pay attention to how it subtly guides your eyes. It's an art form in itself.

360° storytelling vs. flat filmmaking: what's different?

If you're used to traditional filmmaking, you'll need to unlearn a few things before diving into 360°.

Fewer cuts, longer scenes

Fast cuts and quick transitions? Not your friend in 360°. In traditional filmmaking, quick cuts build energy and pacing. In 360°, they can be jarring or even disorienting, especially in VR. That's why 360° videos tend to rely more on long, continuous shots. Instead of jumping between angles, the action should unfold in real time, keeping the experience immersive and smooth.

Think of it as watching an entire scene in one take. Every movement and every interaction needs to feel natural and seamless.

No place to hide

In flat videos, everything happening behind the camera is hidden—crew, lights, equipment. In 360°, everything is visible, which means:

  • No off-camera space – Crew members and gear need to be hidden or carefully placed.
  • Creative camera placement – Sometimes, cameras need to be mounted overhead, on objects, or even worn by the filmmaker.
  • Lighting has to blend into the scene – Think practical light sources, like lamps or natural sunlight.

The entire scene is the story

In a flat video, the action happens where the camera is pointing. In 360°, the entire scene has to be alive. Instead of just filming one focal point, you want interesting things happening in all directions. This creates a sense of discovery, where viewers can look around and find new details every time they watch.

A cool trick? Hide easter eggs. Placing subtle details throughout the scene gives viewers a reason to rewatch—whether it's a hidden text, a secret character cameo, or something happening in the background. The possibilities are nearly endless compared to flat videos.
